On July 6th, 1990, Andrew Lyon and his family's lives would be turned upside down. At just four years old Andrew would be diagnosed with Leukemia. For the next five years Andrew would go through chemotherapy, radiation, many, many shots, a relapse, and all kinds of tests. It was really hard on Andrew and his family. With the support of friends and family along with a team of amazing doctors and nurses, Andrew beat cancer. Unfortunately, all the treatments left him struggling with long-term side effects like short-term memory loss, impulsive behavior, difficulty in abstract thinking and spontaneous processing of information, difficulty with social cues, and problems with repetitive speaking. Andrew never thought he’d be on his own. Today he’s grateful to be alive and thriving as an independent adult who even owns his own home. He was told he might not ever graduate high school, but he did. Andrew even went on to graduate from college. He became an integral part of a youth ministry for many years as a volunteer youth minister with Life Church. He’s an avid song writer and publisher of a music album and now the author of a children’s book, Leon The Brave Little Lion. After overcoming so many challenges in life, Andrew found his calling in giving others hope, encouragement, and opportunities to be a kid. His book, Leon The Brave Little Lion, is a dream come true and helps him to give joy to kids dealing with life threatening illnesses all while supporting the community of nonprofits and organizations that mean so much to him.
